The Lions’ hopes of adding an eighth state championship in track and field are non-existent with only two qualifiers headed for the state meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

But senior Jakolbi Wilson heads south as the Class 1-A Sectional champion in the shot put (46 feet, 5 inches) and discus (123-4) after placing first in both events at the Hope Academy Sectional on May 19. Sophomore Joshua Ball was runner-up in the high jump after clearing 5 feet 3 inches.

State meet points, though, are unlikely for the Lions. Wilson is seeded 18th in the shot and 36th in the discus, while Ball qualified 43rd in the high jump.

Leo’s roster of sprinters consisted almost entirely of underclassmen, however, so it’s possible that the Lions will return to their customary competitiveness in the running events as early as next season.
